A major theme park has chosen to locate a theme park facility in the greater Boston area!!
The new facility will be a zoological theme park which will be called "Kingdoms of Life." Here, organisms and habitats of each of the kingdoms of life will be represented. Like the other two parks, the theme park will be an exciting, magical place where young and old will come to have fun and learn about the many different kinds of organisms that make up our world, how they are grouped, how they live together, and the habitats in which they live. Even more exciting is the fact that you have received the special honor of being chosen to plan this magical kingdom!!
Task:
To plan this magical kingdom, you will need to:
Research information using your textbook, the Internet, and other available resources to gain a better understanding of the 6 kingdoms of life.
Complete the Research Worksheet
Collaborate with group members to make sure that everyone understands the information
Choose one of the following options for a final presentation to the class.
Option 1: Prepare a Powerpoint presentation for your final project.
Option 2: Prepare an informational pamphletfor each kingdom.
Option 3: Draw or create a model of your theme park.
First you'll be assigned to a team of 2-3 students. Within your group, you must decide who will assume the various team roles for this project.
Use the Research Worksheet to guide your research and to record your information about each kingdom.
Search the Kingdom of Life Websites and any other available library resources for required information about each kingdom.
After everyone in your group has completed the research process for that kingdom, discuss the research findings and make sure that everyone agrees on the information. Collaborate with your team and revise and combine information as needed.
Once your group has completed the worksheet, it is time to assume your team roles and complete the requirements for your chosen role.
Using your research information, prepare a formal presentation to be presented to your classmates. Present your finished project to the class through (1) a Powerpoint presentation, (2) an informational pamphlet, (3) draw or create a model of your theme park which includes each of the kingdoms of life.
Students will be assessed on the progress of their research according to the Rubric and the due dates posted. All work should be kept in a folder or binder in order of the phases or sub phases.
Students should turn in the Research Worksheet for each kingdom.
Students are to turn in one of the following: (1) an informational pamphlet for each of the kingdoms. (2) a Powerpoint presentation, or (3) a drawing or model of the park.
Although you will be working as a team, individual grades will be assigned.
After your work on this theme park is complete, you will be familiar with the six main groups or kingdoms scientists use to classify all living things. You will be aware of the major traits of each group as well as know a few examples from each. Also, you will become familiar with some scientific names for these species and learn about their habitats.
Pamphlet: The title page of the pamphlet should include:
Name of Theme Park (Think of a name for your theme park)
Mini Microbes Arena (Make up a name for this section of your park)
Kingdom Archaebacteria (Put the actual Kingdom Name)
Put a small picture that represents the kingdom on the title page.
Other pages of the pamphlet may contain additional information obtained from the research worksheet.
The last page of the pamphlet must include the names of the members of your group.
Powerpoint:
Your group may prepare a PowerPoint presentation to be used as a promotional and informational tool to stimulate interest in a new theme park. The group prepares a PowerPoint presentation consisting of information obtained through the research process. It must include information on the six kingdoms and may be obtained from the Research Worksheet. The presentation must contain at least 1 picture of an organism per kingdom. Creative use of sound effects and graphics is encouraged.
Drawing or Model:
The group must sketch the park with the 6 phase areas. Each area must be named and in a location that allows the guests to flow from one location to another without having to backtrack. Once your group has completed the Research Worksheet, you may choose to draw the sketch for that part of the theme park. If you choose to draw the park, it is a good idea to do a rough sketch first on a sheet of paper, then do the final drawing on the poster. Sketch your park on 1/2 sheet of poster and label the kingdom area(s). Utilize road signs within the park to provide the names of species and descriptive characteristics. Pictures are optional. Color the sketch as desired.
